Critical Study;

Ken Paul is another bmx photographer I have been looking at, in 1999 ken was an editor for ‘Chase Bmx Magazine’ soon after that he became a photographer, he says he has always had an eye for photography, Ken Specialises in Portrait, product, commercial and action photography, Ken shot a gallery for the Canadian Olympic Bmx team member Tory Nyhaug for ESPN, I Really like Kens work and he has some really inspiring images, Ken uses a lot of different techniques such as ‘Depth of field’,the background image in this photograph makes me feel happy because of the colour of the sky and the olympian,  I am going to take some pictures in the style of Paul Kens Photographs.

Reuben is a photographer from Calgary, Canada, his aim in photography is to photograph not the athletes who are in front of his lens, but moreover the soul, culture, community and natural beauty that defines the lives of his subjects. Most skiers and bikers can relate to a constant state of wanderlust and he captures this in his own work.

The image uses the same principles of depth of field. The foreground and middle ground is primarily the forest. As you peer through the trees you can see a mountain biker travelling at full speed through the forest. The photographer has used the rule of thirds in this instance, with the figure on the right hand side of the golden grid.

The photographer appears to have destaurated the image to give inly a hint of colour and saturation. The light is primarily  natural daylight glowing through the tress. It is clear alot of work has been created in post production. Their is evidence the light has been highlighted to create a soft ambience.The texture of the trees in the foreground is clearly visible with the detail softening as the eye leads into the background.

The most interesting concept about this image is the choice of viewpoint and composition. I would like to create a similar image by choosing an equally interesting vantage point and desaturating the image in photoshop. I would like to go out on location and take my initial shots editing them later on in post process.

I am studying the work of Reuben Krabbe for my first project on Extreme Sport, Reubens work really inspires me to base my project on extreme sports, i like the style of images he takes. This image is one of my favorite because of the light shinning through the trees, this makes the photo look dark and also makes the figure and the trees bolder.

this is also one of my favourite images of reubens, i like the way he has made the background white so the cliff stands out. The destaurated image and use of vast white space really draws the viewer to the scale and texture of the rock face. You can just make out the cyclist coming down the sheer face.

My starting point for this project is "In Motion" I am going to base my project on extreme sports. For example BMXing , skateboarding and other sports where i can capture movement.
Bmxing is a personal hobby of mine. For my first unit as i develop camera skills and get inspiration from ther sports photographers i will gain a better understanding of movement and hiow to capture it.
